5 mIn documentary / Evalution & Reflection (finished version)

My documentary is based on my best friend who is a semi professional football player from east London , in this documentary I asked him a series of questions which involved him opening up to the camera about him having confidence issues and how he felt isolated when he was younger , also being the only black male in his football team and when he was in secondary school he was one of the only black guys in his year , so during the interview he  expressed how that effected him , I also added particular visuals so him kicking the football around and I also added footage of him playing with his teams and also him during the training period. My reasons for choosing this subject for my 5 minute documentary is because as a journalist its their job to uncover the truth and discover the real meaning behind everything , and in this case I managed to discover the truth and got my friend to really open up to how football is the only thing he is good at , and why he believes the education route isn't really for him .

To be fair this wasn't my first idea I was really supposed to do my documentary on another person , but that idea changed when I soon realised that person isn't as a reliable source as I thought and because of the time scale I had , I thought it would be best to change my idea , and it really worked out in my favour because I proceed quite an interesting , where with every interview it tells a story about him , and in each frame and angle he spoke well and he doesn't look at the camera that's how you can tell everything he was saying was quite real and honest . My first idea was going to be about a student who is also a music producer , so I really thought there would be a story there , but I believe this documentary I've now made is much better than my ordinary idea . I really do believe I've edited , filmed and produced by me . The documentary modes I defiantly applied to this documentary was observational and particotory because my documentary was in the style of an interview format but I also added quite a lot of visuals , the interviews was mostly filmed in the TV studio where I could control the lighting , and which angles I should shoot from , in this case I just wanted to purely focus on his face , because I wanted the audience to clearly see who he actually is , and how real his story is , I wanted his personality to really come across in the interview , that's why I chose these particular modes because they were the best ones to showcase what I particularly wanted to do with this .

The techniques that I used was a voiceover but what I did was I used the audio from the interview and place it under some visuals and use that as a voiceover , so it was like he was telling his own story , I only did a lot of interviews with him , I used him quite a lot of questions which people could say it leaves you very venerable , in this case it did , the camera got to capture a side which he doesn't usually talk about  which is quite important because it builds the documentary to life , its quite intriguing to watch .The skills that I developed while producing this documentary , I learned  how to plan better to produce such a high quality documentary by choosing quite a hard subject because I had to dig deep and find what was so good about my friend , why does football mean a lot to him , so I had to plan all my question in order to see what his responses would be I also had to plan the day he was coming down to the college and film quite a formal interview , I had to plan the direction of the lighting . I am a very goof editor but even editing this documentary was quite challenging for me because I had to adjust the colour of the video for example I had to make him appear more on the screen , I also developed in sound editing where I could play the sound for example to adjust the volume of the backing music so that you could hear my subject speaking properly over the top , because sometimes the backing music can be quite distracting and you wouldn't be able to hear him in general.

Filming was also quite challenging because I had to figure lighting and structure.

The way I worked independently is that I filmed , edited and produced this documentary , the only reason it worked in my favour is that I worked tactically , and I defiantly played with all my strengthens which defiantly showed in this documentary , it was quite a relatively easy for me to work independently because I am used to doing all the work and producing it at such high quality . to define independent is that you are completely relying on yourself , that if anything was to go wrong it was basically down to you , in this case wasn't the problem , working on my own actually made me work a lot harder , in terms of adapting my skills and putting them into this documentary , overall I liked working on my own , because it gave me that sense of control that everything that I produced was my vision . I was very pleased with the outcome of this documentary its the work or a journalist .

Managing  my time wasn't very easy because the person I was interviewing doesn't go Leyton Sixth form college , he's a semi professional football player , who plays football full time , so when I got him to come to my college for an interview it had to be for that one time only , because of how precious time was in this case , I had to organise when he didn't have football practise or when he wasn't studying for his exams but luckily he lives right next to me so it wasn't hard to arrange to meet by the park to film some visuals of him just generally kicking the ball , or him giving an informal interview about where he trains or where he goes to play football . I would say on average this whole documentary took about 5 to 6 hours to film , which worked to be 3 hours each day we filmed , we filmed over a 2 day period . So in terms of managing time it wasn't really that difficult because I knew exactly what I wanted to film and how exactly it was going to look .

when making this documentary I didn't really face that many problems , the only problem I had was experimenting with lighting that was a major issue because I thought in the TV studio the lighting looked quite nice , but when it came to exporting and editing the footage you could clearly see that it was very dark and you could realty see his face , I am a very good editor but this was the first time I had ever experience colour correction where I had to adjust the lighting so that he appears to be more noticeable in the footage , but in this case I had to do this to every single piece of footage I was using throughout the whole documentary because otherwise it wouldn't look right , that's how I solved that particular situation , another thing that was an issue was that the documentary had to be 5 minutes , and when I looked at my documentary it was only 3mins long , so that's when I had to improvise and use the remaining footage as like a voiceover playing over the top of some key footage of him playing footage and it even , transitions back to the interview towards the end , that's how I extended it from 3 mins to 4 min 54 seconds , which is basically 5 minutes , that's how I solved that situation.

In terms of working with others I didn't really work with a lot of people accept from the technicians because I had to constantly work with them by asking for camera equipment such as a camera and tripod , I also had to work with my subject which happened to

To conclude , my 5 minute film went really well it terms of the way it had been structured my teacher and I quote said " I acted like a proper journalist" meaning was able to undercover the truth in such parts of the interviewing process , one of the things I really liked about this documentary is that "Enock" the guy being interviewed was very open towards the camera he was comfortable enough to express the way he feels knowing that he is being filmed , and on that note he speaks very well . Another thing that went quite well is the editing , I was able to adapt with my editing and take it to the next level in a way , it was probably one of the best edits I had ever done , it probably some of my best work in my eyes , editing went very smoothly . Another thing that went really well was the fact that even though I changed my idea last minute I still produced quite a high quality documentary which happen to have many different techniques incorporated into it which made the idea much more detailed than it actually was .
